The Kingdom Belongs to Such as These...

There are moments when God just focuses your perspective in such a way that it is mindblowing. In the midst of all of the craziness of life in this month of October and as life changes at the porch in the near future, we were celebrating all of that and saying goodbye to our friend and pastor on Wednesday night with an worship service focusing on 'Abide.' There is no better illustration than this one....

Jay's son Abel drew/wrote/made his own comic book a few weeks ago, which we were all pretty impressed with, and he brought it with him Wednesday night to make copies to sell. He and his brother Free wanted to sell it at the bargain price of $1 each, to raise enough money to by some new Legos. Now Abel is ridiculously cool, and we could not tell him no. Plus. It's a comic book, so...there's no saying no to that either. By the end of the night, Jay walked up to me with this quiet smile saying that Abel had raised $10 that night. Then Jay handed me a dollar. Abel had given it to him to pass along saying that this was his tithe. No joke. No prompting. No one telling him to. Just the simple faith of a child imitating the faith of his parents who imitate the faith of people who had discipled them who had discipled them who had discipled them....

The next morning with tears at least in my eyes, I heard the story of what happened that night. Abel went home and was incredibly excited telling his mom that he wanted to raise $30 by selling his comic books and give half of it to support Penny Harvest, an organization that feeds hungry children. Upon hearing this Free started to get upset because he wanted his new Legos. Abel calmly explaining to his little brother, and saying, yeah. You want Legos, but Free what about the kids that don't have any food to eat. What about those kids? Do you remember the song they taught us to sing? "Love grows when you give it away, give it away, give it away..."

Two little boys singing, realizing what they had that wasn't theirs to start with, giving it away to feed hungry kids, loving them like Jesus does. Tears fill my eyes. My soul groans within me. God teach me to be like them.
